Song of the Summer

Written by Steve Weinstein

06/25/2010

Every summer, there’s The Song. The one you hear over and over and over again. Last year, it was the David Guetta/Kelly Rowland "When Love Takes Over." There are certain rules for "Song of the Summer."

  • It must be an anthem
  • It must be performed by a female singer
  • It must have a hook
  • It must have been subject to remixes
  • It must be danceable
  • The song must have been released within the past 10 months (often, they are several months old)

I’m old enough to remember 1989, and Donna Summer’s monster hit "This Time I Know It’s for Real." Not to mention the Madonna ‘90s. I’m sure people will object to the qualifiers above. I guess I can cite one possible exception: "Sandstorm" from DJ Darude, summer 2000. Since I spend a lot of time on Fire Island, where "anthems" rule, knowing the song of the summer is easy: It’s the song I hear at every house party, every tea dance, and every night at the Pavilion, Sip ‘N’ Twirl & Ice Palace. Usually at least twice.

So, the question that we’re asking all of you is: What is going to be the song of the summer 2010?

A few suggestions:

  • Lady Gaga/BeyoncĂ©: Telephone
  • Lady Gaga: Alejandro
  • Lady Gaga: whatever the hell will be coming out
  • Adam Lambert: What Do You Want from Me (this is my personal choice; it’s got that unbearably catchy hook that makes it inevitable at every Fire Island tea dance)
  • Rihanna: Te Amo
  • Cevin Fisher: We’re the Lucky Ones
  • Scissor Sisters: Fire With Fire (specifically, the Peter Rauhofer mix)
  • Ke$ha: Tic Toc (yes, it’s old but it falls well within the 10-month rule, and it’s the hookiest hook of late 2009 and pretty much this year)

What will it be? Any of the above? Or did I miss something? Weigh in!

Kelly may have back to back summers with Commander. David Guetta has single-handed her a solo career.

It should be Te Amo but it has been deemed too racy for north america and was released internationally excluding the US.

How about California Gurls by Katy Perry?  That has “played-to-death” written all over it. On the more housey side, I’d pick Benny Benassi’s Spaceship (with Kelis) as a dark horse choice.

BTW, I disagree that the song of the summer has to be performed by a female singer - and I guess you do too, if you’re choosing Adam Lambert as your pick.

I think it could be any song, but from a biased opinion, lol, I love Adam Lambert “Whatta Ya Want From Me” because it plays on loop via radios and everywhere.  Biggest song of his career thus far.

Yeah, it’s definitely Commander if you factor in how often it’s been played and yet never seems to get old.
