noiZe Magazine: 60 Issues and an early Sweet 16 celebration!
Like a teenager celebrating and reflecting on life, excited about the future, noiZe is gearing up to celebrate its Sweet 16 next year as well as this, our 60th issue! When I think back over sixty issues, I’m blown away by how much we have done. Sixty innovative and eye-catching covers, over 450 articles written by some of the top writers in the dance and music scene, over 600 CD and music reviews, 3,000 calendar event reviews, and over 7,000 photographs have filled our pages. As a matter of fact, when you multiply it all by the number of issues we print, you get 300,000,000 total pages produced (three hundred million!) in 15 years. That’s a lot of trees (which is why we love the internet so much!) From the very beginning – when we were still Circuit Noize – it’s been a wild ride, and our long, successful history points to an even more exciting future.
As we reflect on what we’ve accomplished, we always come back to one concept that I’ve talked about before in this column – integrity. Because first and foremost we are members of this great community, we support every amazing event, promoter and DJ – not just those that choose to advertise with us. We have approached the dance and music scene with a positive attitude every step of the way. We emphasize the humor and fun that should always underpin what we do, even as we bring serious issues to light and ponder what all of this means to us. We promote harm reduction constantly; it is an undercurrent to many of our articles. We never bash a party or a DJ just because someone didn’t have fun or didn’t like the music – how does that support and improve the scene? For 15 years we have done our best to help build and promote a network of strong, successful events around the world.
But we’re nothing without our readers, of course. Our readers have provided tremendous support to noiZe by heavily subscribing to our print version, as well as deluging our websites with traffic each month – keeping us in the #1 spot for our category across the Internet for the past ten years. We’re extremely proud of noiZemag.com and our extensive online database of events, Partyfinder.com. These two sites have provided up-to-the-date DJ and venue information as well as insightful and interesting descriptions of these events for the past twelve years. Over 60,000 people a month rely on the comprehensive information we provide to determine their travel plans, and, as we say, “Choose Their Parties Wisely.”
So what are we doing to plan for our Sweet 16? A lot. First, noiZe is now available 8 times a year – every 6 weeks! In addition to our quarterly seasonal issues, we will be producing special editions between each issue, providing you with more coverage of the events and parties that you crave. Available in every major city, nightclub, hotspot, lounge, gym and coffeehouse – noiZe has you covered. Our online flip-book continues to draw internet-savvy and international readers at an astounding rate. This digital version, along with our readers on Facebook and followers on Twitter, serves the largest audience of partygoers anywhere.
We are also celebrating by launching two new websites: CircuitPartyGuide.com and GayParties.com. These two sites will take over most of the Circuit-related coverage from Partyfinder.com (which will feature mixed and straight events in addition to gay events this summer). CircuitPartyGuide.com and GayParties.com
feature completely new user interfaces, more events, more coverage, and more visibility for our advertisers. For our 60,000 visitors a month, they also provide a more intense focus on traditional Circuit Events as well as city-specific lounge and bar events.
We are so proud of our history, our readers, our advertisers, and all of the great promoters and DJs who continue to help make us the #1 Premier Guide to Dance, Festival and Circuit Events Worldwide. So enjoy our 60th issue, and check out all of the amazing people, events, and places we feature – like Lena Love, Mark Baker, Andrew Briskin, and the city of San Francisco.
In This Issue
DJ Spotlight: Quentin Harris grew up surrounded by musicians, so it’s no surprise he was playing classical piano as a child. But growing up in Detroit meant being surrounded by techno, so when he got the DJ bug, he took his skills and knowledge and applied it to the turntables. Years later, he’s become one of the most sought-after mixmasters in the world.
City Spotlight: If being gay were a religion, we’d all pray facing San Francisco, because this legendary center of culture, nightlife, alternative lifestyles and left-leaning politics truly is our Mecca. Steve Kleine gives you all the inside dope on where to eat, drink, party, be enlightened, shop, and even get off.
Tango Blues: How do local bars and clubs bring in top-flight DJs and singers, especially in these tough times? Andrew Briskin has hit on a formula that marries corporate sponsors with talent. The result is tours like last year’s wildly successful Music to Wear Tour for Andrew Christian’s sexy underwear brand.
Promoter Spotlight: When we last heard from Mark Baker, he was the mega-producer of the Gay Days franchise in Orlando. After some time off to regroup, he’s back with a new concept for a new generation of clubgoers. World|Vibe Orlando will feature the top House DJs and singers for a straight (and gay!) crowd.
Lena Love: What do you get when you take a female bodybuilder and set her loose on the Circuit? You get the off-the-wall shows that this disco diva-in-the-making has been taking on the road, from Vancouver to Montreal. This Toronto-based performance artist believes the only rule is to break the rules. Remember: You have been warned.
