It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. - Charles Darwin
Change is good. Turning the page on a new year is the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate who we are and how we live our lives. For Circuit Noize, this means taking stock of how we have grown in our approach to partying, traveling, staying healthy, and living life to the fullest. You might be wondering what happened to the word “Circuit” on our cover. Are we still a Circuit magazine? Absolutely, but we wanted to take this opportunity to broaden our approach to the issues and ideas that we deal with on a regular basis within these pages.
Just as being gay becomes less and less of a marginal cultural phenomenon (we have achieved an inspiring amount of integration and general acceptance into mainstream society over the past twenty years), the Circuit has also become just one part of a larger gay culture. The issues that once seemed Circuit-centric - such as world travel, attending festivals and dance events, taking cruises, and celebrating our lives - now have a broader, more varied appeal to the ascendant gay community at large. As a result, we here at noiZe feel that the time is right to recognize that our focus is no longer solely Circuit events, but lounges, bars, clubs, all types of music, healthful living, and a wide variety of dance events. We are the buzz, the static, the underground vibe and its emerging impact on society at large. We’re the noise behind the celebration and exploration of our lives.
We have some staff changes here at noiZe as well. Jeffery Taylor, our former Senior Editor, is now our Editor in Chief, continuing the role so expertly brought to life by Circuit Noize founder Steve Kammon, who passed away last year. D. Michael Taylor, a longtime columnist for us, will fill the Senior Editor position and serve up his uncanny view of the world while helping us navigate through new territory as a magazine.
The cover of this issue is a stereogram - check out the box on the next page for more details. More importantly, check out all of the great new content we have for you. Our last issue focused on New York City, so we thought we would balance the equation by dedicating the first issue of noiZe to the City of Angels. Our editorial team hails from NYC, while Gary and I are LA-based, so we thought it was only fair to give both hometowns the respect they deserve. Don’t miss a moving reminiscence of dance floors past by superstar gay blogger Joe.My.God; an interview with up-and-coming talent Guy B.; a bold message about the serosorting phenomenon; and selected photos sprinkled throughout the issue from Rassle, a coffee table book that might wind up on your nightstand instead.
Beginning in our May issue, we’ll expand our calendar to list parties both on and off the Circuit, talk about how you can become a “noiZe boy”, as well as cover some of the biggest dance events from places like South Africa, Germany, Canada, Australia, and the good ‘ol US of A.
It’s a new year and a new world, and we’ll continue to bring it to you with the volume turned way up.
